Getting the Ball Rolling: Construction Begins at Williamsburg Sports and Events Center

Williamsburg Sports Complex Groundbreaking

GuernseyTingle was on hand for a groundbreaking ceremony celebrating the start of construction at the Williamsburg Sports and Events Center, a major indoor sports complex in the Historic Triangle.

A large gathering of community leaders, city officials and project stakeholders attended the ceremony, showcasing how the facility is expected to bring sports tourism and economic growth to the region

GuernseyTingle served as architectural consultant for the 200,000 square foot facility which will include hardcourt space for 12 basketball courts that can be converted to 24 volleyball courts, 36 pickleball courts, and other large sports and events activities. Plans also call for a ninja gym and rock climbing walls, and the world-class facility will be capable of hosting state, regional, and national athletic tournaments.

Scheduled to open in 2026, the Williamsburg Sports and Events Center is a collaborative effort by the City of Williamsburg, James City County, and York County under the Historic Triangle Recreational Facilities Authority. Other project partners include MEB, Clark Nexsen, Timmons Group, Victus Advisors, Henderson, and GET Solutions.

GuernseyTingle has significant experience designing sports and entertainment facilities. Most recently, the firm was the architect and interior designer for the Hampton Virginia Aquaplex, a state-of-the-art aquatics center that earned awards from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) and Engineering News-Record MidAtlantic.
