Newport News Harwood House

Project Overview

  • Full redesign of a demolished two-story wrap-around front porch
  • Restoration of original slate roof to include historic detail

When attention to historic detail is required, GuernseyTingle brings a wealth of knowledge.

Built in 1900, the Harwood House is located in the North End Huntington Heights Historic District in Newport News. When the historic gem was donated to the City of Newport News in 2015, GuernseyTingle was commissioned to help restore the home to its original 1900 appearance.

The Harwood House’s original two-story wrap-around porch was torn down by previous owners; rebuilding the iconic porch is one of the first priorities in the City’s renovation.

Additionally, GuernseyTingle is developing plans to restore the original slate roofing. Beyond making the building more watertight, we will address structural concerns with the existing roof framing.

With both elements of the project, historic details such as wooden columns, flat-seamed copper porch roofing, and metal ridge cresting will be incorporated.
