Construction Speeds Ahead at Petersburg Park and Ride
The GuernseyTingle team recently visited the Petersburg Park & Ride site where construction is underway and ahead of schedule. This new 76,570 square foot facility with 216 parking spaces is expected to finish in May 2022 and will increase travel accessibility throughout the Tri-Cities area.
The new facility complements and is built adjacent to the existing Petersburg Transit Center. Once complete, the Park & Ride will offer safe, accessible parking for locals and visitors while reducing congestion and making it easier to use public transit.
GuernseyTingle partnered closely with the Petersburg based Tindall Corporation to create pre-cast concrete panels for construction that match the design aesthetic of the existing Petersburg Transit Center brick and concrete. Construction is led by general contractor Mark Turner Construction.
Using architectural pre-cast concrete brings new levels of design flexibility and efficiency to construction projects without compromising quality. Pre-cast concrete structures are the most durable and economical way to provide structured parking. They can also be constructed quickly, as they are manufactured off-site, brought to the site and erected in a short time frame.
Tindall’s close proximity to the construction site provided additional benefits, helping to further expedite the overall construction process.
Timeliness is an important consideration for the Petersburg Park & Ride project, which received grant funding through Virginia’s SMART SCALE, a prioritization process that directs limited tax dollars into projects that best meet the state’s most critical transportation needs. GuernseyTingle collaborated with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) on a feasibility study that culminated in five different construction scenario possibilities and ultimately the preferred site placement and design. The chosen Park & Ride design met the strict SMART SCALE parameters, which required it to be built on real estate near a transit station, provide at least 200 spaces and have a budget of no more than $8 million.
Originally scheduled for completion by June of 2023, the Petersburg Park & Ride project is currently on track to finish by May of 2022 – over a year ahead of schedule.
