GuernseyTingle received three honors at the 2021 Hampton Roads Association for Commercial Real Estate (HRACRE) Excellence in Development Design Awards program held in Norfolk recently, including the coveted Juror’s Choice Award for The Estate at Kingsmill. The award was among 13 selected by a panel of industry experts and presented at the 25th anniversary HRACRE ceremony on October 28.

GuernseyTingle also earned an Award of Excellence for Best Renovated or Historic Rehabilitation Project for its role leading the design of The Estate at Kingsmill’s $3 million top-to-bottom renovation.

Formerly known as the Pettus House, The Estate at Kingsmill was originally built in the 1980s as the private mansion for the Busch family, known for the Anheuser-Busch Companies and Busch Gardens theme parks that bear the name. Working closely with construction and interior design teams, GuernseyTingle helped transform the four-bedroom, 7,000 SF residence into a luxury rental for upscale vacationers and corporate retreats.

GuernseyTingle partnered with Escalante Golf and Kingsmill Resort leadership to ensure design elements aligned with their vision every step of the way. Taking advantage of its perch along the James River, a key design goal was ensuring guests could enjoy the rare opportunity to experience both the sunrise and the sunset from the same location.

“GuernseyTingle achieved precisely what we had asked of them with The Estate at Kingsmill – to make it an example of 21st century architectural excellence by maximizing it’s design potential and historical significance to Kingsmill,” said Elcio Silva, Partner, Business Operations at Escalante Golf. “They delivered a masterpiece with The Estate, and we’re excited to be aligned with them on multiple projects at Kingsmill, including our residential developments at Burwell’s Bluff and The Enclave, and the resort’s Fitness Center.”

In addition to the two awards for The Estate at Kingsmill, GuernseyTingle was also recognized for its design work at Kiln Creek’s NEST Kitchen & Taphouse, receiving an Award of Merit for Best Recreation/Entertainment/Hospitality Project. At NEST, GuernseyTingle spearheaded the transformation of a golf community café into a destination dining and resort event space. Enhancements helped boost business at Kiln Creek Golf Club & Resort and also established a brand flagship that is inspiring additional resort community improvements.

“We are extremely proud of these awards, which showcase GuernseyTingle’s forward-thinking design philosophy and truly collaborative approach to serving clients,” said GuernseyTingle President Tom Tingle, AIA. “Congratulations to the GuernseyTingle team and our fellow design and construction partners who helped us bring client visions to reality.”

GuernseyTingle has grown to become one of the largest architectural firms on the Virginia Peninsula over the course of its 37-year history. The firm takes a highly cooperative approach to relationship building and creative visioning for clients across the U.S., providing full design services including architecture, interiors and planning.

The HRACRE awards are the latest in a series of recognition earned by the Williamsburg-based firm. Earlier this year, Virginia Living magazine honored GuernseyTingle among the best architecture firms in the Eastern Region of Virginia following the results of a readers’ survey.

In 2020, GuernseyTingle was named one of the Best Places to Work in Virginia by Virginia Business magazine. That same year, the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) also awarded teams from GuernseyTingle and Henderson, Inc. a National Award of Merit for the St. Bede Catholic Church Expansion in James City County, VA.

The growing firm also recently completed a major expansion and renovation of its main office in James City County, Virginia. To learn more about GuernseyTingle, visit guernseytingle.com.
