Project Overview

  • 1,500 SF Caffè and Bakery build-out
  • Space fits the historic character of the area while having a contemporary voice of its own.
  • Well-known European restaurant chain with locations all over the world

A fun tenant build-out keeping the historic feel of Colonial Williamsburg while adding clean lines and minimalistic design to the new space.

illy Caffè is located in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg. Centrally located in Merchant’s Square, illy attracts everyone from tourists to locals to William and Mary College students. Once a two-story clothing store, the existing space was converted into the contemporary illy Caffè, with David Nice Builders’ help. Originating in Italy, illy is a well-known European restaurant chain with locations all over the world now, including Virginia. illy’s branding includes a color scheme of red, black, white, and neutrals, clean lines, minimal design, and “on-theme” coffee cups.

Our team looked to combine the sleek contemporary features of the illy brand with Colonial Williamsburg’s authenticity using brick, frameless glass, and the minimal illy color palette. GuernseyTingle designers worked with illy and the owners of the caffè to create a space that fits in with the Colonial feel while having a voice of its own. The caffè features multiple seating areas, including booths and individual tables, an outdoor patio area, a merchandise area, grab-n-go coolers, a gelato counter, and a coffee bar.
