Adapting a new vision to an existing church building created a one-of-a-kind space for future outreach & growth on the Peninsula.
Liberty Baptist Church is a multi-site church with campuses across Hampton Roads. They have dedicated staff, worship leaders, and campus pastors at each location, and on Sundays, the lead pastor is broadcast to all the locations from the main campus in Hampton.
When GuernseyTingle started working with Liberty on the new York River campus, we started with the basic requirements of a Liberty campus such as a large worship space with screens for video teaching, production areas, open lobby spaces, and a kid’s education wing. Then, we worked closely with the church and our consultants through weekly conference meetings, additional conversations, and on-site meetings to create a vision and a plan for this new space. Touring their current campuses let us take note of commonalities between the spaces, so that we could include them at York River. The existing building had several unique qualities to it that made for very flexible designs and interesting moments throughout the building. For example, the structure is comprised of a unique truss system that spans across both main axis, therefore eliminating the need for interior bearing walls, and, when exposed in the main worship space, provides a striking look to the space.
